The main purpose of the Night Watch, historically, was to patrol cities at night for safety. This practice originated in several cultures and was crucial for maintaining order, deterring crime, and providing a sense of security to residents after dark. Night Watchmen would typically walk through neighborhoods, keeping an eye out for suspicious activities or disturbances and responding to any threats to public safety that might occur during the nighttime hours when visibility was low and many people were at home. This role was instrumental in the development of modern policing, as it laid the groundwork for more structured law enforcement agencies focused on community safety and crime prevention.

The other options, while they may involve some aspects of policing or community activity, do not align with the primary historical objectives of the Night Watch. For example, enforcing traffic laws primarily emerged with the advent of automobiles and more structured traffic regulations, which were not the concerns of early Night Watchmen. Managing local parks and signaling for neighborhood events are also outside the realm of the Night Watch's responsibilities, as their focus was centered on providing security during nighttime hours.
